Programme 4: AS to A Level Maths
From my experience in teaching, one of the most underestimated issues facing students is the huge jump for Year 12 into Year 13 students studying A level maths. Whilst the content of AS and A level maths is broadly similar, the depth of study of these topics is much greater in Year 13.
The jump from Year 12 to 13 Maths can feel huge! Even for those students who have flown through Year 12, the increased demands can feel overwhelming at times. With this programme of study, you should leave with a sense of confidence for the upcoming year. I certainly do not intend to cover the full course in these sessions, but you will feel confident and prepared for the year ahead.
Who it is for
Students who:
- have completed the first year of the Maths A Level (AS level)
- want to feel prepared before term starts
- are aiming for strong grades
- may have struggled somewhat with the Year 12 content
6-session online or in person (depending on location mileage will be charged at 45p per mile) programme at times that is convenient to you! These sessions are available during the last three weeks of the summer holidays (Saturday 8th to Sunday 30th August)
Each session: 75 minutes divided into 30 minutes recapping/consolidating Year 12 content, 45 minutes will be looking ahead to Year 13, some potential misconceptions and key skills that you will need

Session plan
Session 1: Calculus: Differentiation
Recap the basics leading into the rules and techniques that you will be introduced to in Year 13.
Session 2: Calculus: Integration
Key topic! Not to be missed! The content for Year 13 Integration is huge, we will spend the session recapping what you already know and some of the things to look out for in Year 13
Session 3: Trigonometry
Another huge topic! We will be building on the key identities you have learnt on year 12 and looking at how we can use these as building blocks to even more identities that we can use.
Session 4: Series
A recap of the Binomial expansion before looking at how we can extend this to negative and non-integer powers. A look ahead to Arithmetic and Geometric sequences.
Session 5: Algebra and Function
A recap from Year 12 followed by more complex functions, this session will also include work on proof. By the end of the session, you will be aware of the different kinds of proof needed for all of A level maths
Session 6: Applied maths
A roundup of skills needed for Applied maths with a particular focus on the use of components in Mechanics and the Normal Distribution in Statistics
