Description
Programme 5: AS to A Level Further Maths
The content in Year 13 Further Maths is roughly similar to Year 12 Further Maths but more in depth. However, I would suggest that this programme of study is more suited to students who have struggled with the Year 12 content. If you feel that you coped fine with this, from my experience I would think that you will cope fine with the Year 13 content also.
With this programme of study, we will divide the sessions in two, we will spend the first half consolidating and testing understanding of the AS level content. In the second half we will look at the upcoming year and what you can expect. You should finish the course with notes that you can refer to as the year progresses.
Who it is for
Students who:
- have completed the first year of the Further Maths A Level (AS level)
- want to feel prepared before term starts
- are aiming for strong grades
- have struggled somewhat with the Year 12 content
6-session online or in person (depending on location mileage will be charged at 45p per mile) programme at times that is convenient to you! These sessions are available during the last three weeks of the summer holidays (Saturday 8th to Sunday 30th August)
Each session: 75 minutes divided into 30 minutes recapping/consolidating Year 12 content, 45 minutes will be looking ahead to Year 13, some potential misconceptions and key skills that you will need

Session plan
Session 1: Complex Numbers: The basics
We will recap/consolidate the basic skills you learnt in Year 12. We will then look ahead at the more complex methods you will need in Year 13.
Session 2: Complex Numbers: Argand diagrams and Trigonometry
We will recap Argand diagrams including Loci. We will then look ahead to Euler’s Theorem, and it’s uses in Trigonometric Expansions.
Session 3: Hyperbolic Functions
We will have a brief recap of some key trigonometric facts but mainly this session will be looking ahead at some key skills associated with Hyperbolic functions
Session 4: Polar coordinates
A recap of some coordinate geometry and Parametric Equations (you may not have covered this yet), before diving into the circular world of Polar coordinates!!!!
Session 5: Calculus
Building on your knowledge of basic integration, looking at improper integrals and we will look ahead to some more complex volumes of revolution.
Session 6: Differential Equations
Using your knowledge of integration, we will look ahead to what a Differential Equation is and how to fundamentally solve a first and second order differential equation.
** NB there may be the option to swap one or two of these sessions to work on the two optional components of your course but obviously this just depends on what your school have chosen
